The 12 hours of Sepang
MEREDAK MILLENIUM ENDURANCE RACE 2010
August 6th – 8th, 2010
Already a week before their start at the FIA GT1-World Championship in Spa the Dutch Peter Kox and the German Christopher Haase are at the starting line of the 12 hours race in Sepang /Malaysia (MEREDAK MILLENIUM ENDURANCE RACE 2010).
In the Team Racing Award the two share a Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560 with Tumku Hammam Sulong (MYS).
With temperatures being as high as 35 ° Celsius, high humidity and a dry lap Christopher Haase started the Q1 on Friday and put on a new set of tyres after two warming up laps. In lap 6 he not only drove the fastest lap in this qualifying (2:04.888) leaving 2 seconds distance to the car in second place, but he also set up the lap record among the GT cars.
“I am getting on well with the lap and the Pirelli tyres. At night the visibility is a bit difficult as some parts of the circuit are very well lighted other unfortunately not at all. To find the vertex of the circuit is a bit difficult, especially when you don’t know the circuit very well,” Christopher Haase said.
Also Peter Knox got on well with his car and the Pirelli tyres in the second qualifying. He came back to the pit after two warming up laps to get a new set of tyres, too. At the end of the qualifying Peter Kox was in first position. He also made his debut in Sepang.
The Q3 was done by the Gentleman driver Hammam, who drove almost as fast as the Audi factory drivers. He crossed the finishing line in fifth place. Therefore his team won starting position two.
“Tunku Hammam is one of our customers and is a very enthusiastic driver. We have already talked about further common projects, for example the 24 hours race in Dubai. And he obviously gets on very well with the brand Lamborghini, as he has already ordered a second car,” Hubert Thanbichler from Reiter Engineering said.
Christopher Haase will start the race on Sunday night at 0:00 (local time). According to the rules the drivers have to alternate after at least 75 minutes, so that Peter Kox will drive his first stint at about 1:15. To reach their own expectations, namely the victory in Sepang, the two will share the night stints. Before in the morning the man from Malaysia will then be the driver. During the whole race the drivers are allowed to sit behind the steering wheel for a maximum time of 5 hours.
